Social Media is Great, Just Ain't For Me, Pal.

You have free will, keep using them. I'm using mine by not doing anything.

This is not a rant, more of an opinion piece. I don’t hate the concept of social media. I think, as much as it is a double-edged sword, it’s still the leading media to connect people who have the same interests and reconnect lost connections. But in my case, I just don’t feel like I have much use for it. I connect with people with the same hobbies through word of mouth, since I already have several friends who have similar interests, or they have other friends they introduce to me for the niche interests I have. I understand that this is a privilege, but I’m not saying that my method of connecting with new people is superior. Using social media to make friends is awesome and always will be.

Okay, but Yulia, what if you want to know what your friends and families are doing? Easy, we text or call each other, and we meet up to catch up. I have never once found something interesting or important in Instagram stories or Twitter updates (no, I’m never calling it X.) People can show off their fancy lattes, and their trip overseas, and those are awesome! You deserve to show that you’re having fun, fuck those people who call you fake when you only post happy stories to your Instagram. Like what, Carol? Do you want them to post that they are constipated after eating too much meat on New Year's Eve? No. They want to share that they had an amazing experience celebrating it with their loved ones.

That’s from the viewing point of view, but as a user, I never felt like posting anything about my life. First, my life is not interesting enough to post. I’m more of a receiver than a giver (don’t make this into anything sexual, I beg you.) Second, sometimes I find it goofy when yesterday, I wanted to share this picture, but the next morning, I was like “Naah, come to think of it, that pic is really not that great.”

I still have some social media accounts, since I don’t want to remove the archives, the fun stories with my friends and families back when I was still an active user. But I just won’t use them regularly anymore.
