I stumbled upon this game when I was searching, not for an RPG game, but for a game with pirate stuff in it. Since I enjoyed Assassin's Creed: Black Flag so much. Disclaimer; I hate any other Assassin's Creed games.

I would like to start with how great the settings and scenery for this game are. Beautiful. The world is vast, and the companions are good enough to be memorable. Characters are distinct, the leaders are interesting, especially the natives.

But, this game has flaws. Boy does it have flaws.

First, fetch quests are fucking annoying. Especially one called Logging Expedition. I want to deduct 2 points just for this mission alone. In that mission, I remember going back to New Serene at least 4 times.

Second, the pace in this game is slow and long, and by long, I mean, unnecessarily long. Some of the missions could be done in an hour, but no, after each objective, you have to report back to Constantin, to the Mother Cardinal... just... urgh... I understand if it's long because it's packed with good content, but the pace is filled with stupid "Go to Hikmet, find documents, report to Constantin, report to Mother Cardinal, find documents, report to Duncas, ask for Ullan's help, help Ullan, visit Dedre, go back to Mother Cardinal, report to Constantin, report back to Hikmet" so on and so forth.

Third, the combat, for melee users, is boring. Not bad or annoying, just boring. Magic is fun, but the adrenaline meter takes too long to refill. Also, the weapons' stats are all over the place, legendary weapons are most of the time, inferior to regular weapons with upgraded stats.

Fourth, romance is badly written and just all over the place. I've always wanted to romance Vasco, but since I missed the one dialog option (there's no hint whatsoever of which to pick for romance) I couldn't. They locked me out of the romance without showing me signs of it. so I romanced Kurt instead, the easy choice.

And fifth, the writing is sometimes, undeniably bad and... obvious. I won't get into spoilers but sometimes characters hit you with the "this is bad, we should pick this person instead of this person", the game has biases on who to pick for us. They don't want us to make the wrong choices (cough like Vanguard cough).

But, despite the slow pacing, and the meh combat, this game is still a lot of fun. Far from Vanguard in a lot of aspects, except for the handholding. Enjoyable, but frustrating. If it's faster in pace, I'd definitely play the DLC and replay the game. But for now, I finished it once and I think it's just decent enough to remember as a good game worth playing at least once.

7/10.
